A Death Café is a welcoming community gathering where people—often complete strangers—come together over tea and cake to have open, honest conversations about death. The purpose is simple: to increase awareness of death so we can make the most of our finite lives.

A Death Café is not grief therapy, counseling, or a support group. It has no agenda, no objectives to accomplish, and no predetermined themes. Instead, it is a participant-led discussion where everyone is invited to share, listen, and explore whatever arises in a safe, respectful environment.

Over the next 90 minutes, stories are shared, questions are explored, perspectives are broadened, and meaningful connections are made. While tears are certainly welcome, so is laughter. Participants often discover that talking about death is not depressing—it is deeply human, surprisingly life-affirming, and often filled with moments of humor, compassion, and hope.

Every Death Café reminds us that when we create space to talk about death without fear or judgment, we also create space to live more intentionally, love more deeply, and build stronger, more compassionate communities.

Christine Ruggiero is an End-of-Life Doula, deathcare educator, and advocate dedicated to helping individuals and families navigate the end-of-life experiences with compassion and confidence. She is the owner of Holding Space Las Vegas, an end-of-life practice, and currently serves as End-of-Life Director for the Doula Co-op of Nevada, a nonprofit organization that educates, supports, and advocates for birth and end-of-life doulas.

Christine’s work is rooted in nearly two decades of supporting people through life transitions as owner and organizer of Las Vegas Professional Organizers, serving seniors and clients facing significant change. In 2022, she earned certifications as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and through Doulagivers as an Elder Care Doula, Care Consultant, and End-of-Life Doula. She also spent nine years serving in various roles at SafeNest Domestic Violence Agency.

A passionate advocate for death literacy, Christine founded Death Café Las Vegas, facilitating more than 65 Death Cafés and engaging over 275 community members in meaningful conversations about death, dying, and living well.
