In honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, please join us for a conversation with filmmaker and author Gene Greenberg.
Mr. Greenberg will show his documentary film, A Promise to Our Fathers, followed by a Q & A and discussion of his book, No Matter How Far.
In 1958, Gene Greenberg and Larry Pollard, two nine-year-old boys met as neighbors and became best friends. Their fathers had each experienced the hell of war - one as a victim of the Nazis, the other as a soldier and liberator. The boys made a promise to their fathers to share their families’ remarkable experiences and ensure the world never forgets the horrors of the Holocaust.
A Promise to Our Fathers recounts this special story of Holocaust survivors who lost everything but each other and an Army/Air-Corps medic who treated survivors in the Dachau concentration camp. It’s a moving tribute to the power of survival, to friendship and to a commitment to make a difference in the fight against anti-Semitism.
No Matter How Far is a haunting, ultimately redemptive story inspired by the author’s parent's survival of the Holocaust.
Avram Grynberg survived them all; Nazi occupation, the misery of ghetto life, Auschwitz, hard labor in Nazi coal mines, and a brutal death march. When liberation came, he went home to Lodz, Poland to wait for others in his family to return. None came back.
After five months of mourning, a chance encounter with a woman on the streets of post-war Lodz led Avram on a six-hundred-mile journey to a displaced persons camp in Germany, where he was joyously reunited with his wife. Along the way, had to deal with rigid Russian diplomats, thieves, thugs, and continued antisemitism, but nothing was going to stop him from his quest.
